Where Did Standardized Testing Come From Anyway?
Standardized testing has been an important issue
in the U.S. education system since first introduced in the Elementary and
Secondary Education Act of 1965. This was the beginning of required testing in
public schools. More recent legislation,
No Child Left Behind Act of 2002, legitimized test scores by linking funding to
achievement.
Standardized testing was first known to be utilized in China where the test was used as an application for government work. Around 1900, Alfred Binet began developing his IQ testing protocol which was later name Standford-Binet Intelligence Test. This was the first appearance of the modern IQ test. In the United States, standardized tests were not widely used until the industrial revolution caused an influx in population moving to and living within urban centers. Growing cities across the United States demanded large scale education solutions. Standardized testing was a simple and efficient way, at the time, to evaluate large numbers of children and adolescent students.
The standardized test was created and utilized to in order handle the population explosion during the industrial revolution. It was meant to be a quick and efficient means of solving a pressing issue. Today, the education system faces different challenges and these challenges require a more dynamic approach in order to provide all students with the opportunity to learn and grow in all areas of academia.
